| In Young Charles Sumner and the Legacy of the American Enlightenment, Anne-Marie Taylor has written what likely will become the definitive account of the pre-Senate career of Charles Sumner. Taylor writes in an engaging style, demonstrates an easy mastery of both primary and secondary sources, and offers a detailed portrait of a complex subject. Surprisingly and without explanation, Taylor concludes her story in 1851. Anyone interested in learning of Sumner's famed and controversial Senate career will have to look elsewhere. Or perhaps await a second volume. |
