Letters to the Editor
To the Editor:
LeRoy Ashby's review of my Men against Myths: The Progressive Response (March 2003 JAH) shows an understanding of the book. He is correct that the sample of progressive politicians was partially chosen to trace their ideas into the New Deal. Other considerations included diversity of locale and political affiliation. That they differed on many specific issues while agreeing on the fundamental need to restrain corporate control of politics and the economy was a major point of the study. The chapter on E. P. Costigan was labeled "Urban Progressive," not because there was an urban view of national issues, but because he, alone in this sample, was deeply committed to, and involved with, urban reform.
