Catherine Forslund has written an admirable book about an extraordinary woman in U.S.-East Asian relations. Anna Chennault was a Chinese journalist when she married Gen. Claire Chennault in 1947. In the decades after 1950, she became a prominent leader in what Forslund describes as America's informal relations with East Asia. Forslund has done careful research in primary sources, including Anna Chennault's papers, and her biography, while sympathetic, displays commendable balance and fair-mindedness. |
