Book Review
Serving History in a Changing World: The Historical Society of Pennsylvania in the Twentieth Century. By Sally F. Griffith. (Philadelphia: Historical Society of Pennsylvania, 2001. x, 539 pp. $59.95, ISBN 0-910732-27-2.)

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP), among the nation's oldest and most venerable historical organizations, commissioned this study of its history to mark its 175th anniversary, typically an occasion for celebration rather than critical reflection. That it did so in the midst of a very bitter, very public debate about its future is all the more reason for concern that the resulting volume would be an exercise in self-justification. Serving History in a Changing World is neither celebratory nor self-justifying, but rather a deeply researched, measured study of a major cultural institution. It is a credit to both the society and the book's author. |
