Growing up Protestant: Parents, Children, and Mainline Churches. By Margaret Lamberts Bendroth. (New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press, 2002. xii, 195 pp. Cloth, $58.00, ISBN 0-8135-3013-X. Paper, $20.00, ISBN 0-8135-3014-8.)

Margaret Lamberts Bendroth wrote this book as part of the Education and Formation of Faith project, funded by Lilly Endowment, Inc., and located at Valparaiso University. Like other authors associated with the project, Bendroth wrote primarily as a historian but also made normative judgments, in this case about various models for marriage, family, and child rearing among American Christians. So the book is both a historical study and an exercise in the Christian ethics of family life. |
