Everyone who loves the national parks has a story like this one: some years ago, when Old Faithful still erupted faithfully, I stood next to a preteen boy to watch the geyser blow its top to the sky. When it was all over, he turned to his brother and said, "I could have done better with a garden hose." It is likely that underneath his cool demeanor he was actually impressed, but I wondered, What was he expecting? What kind of experience did he think would be delivered to him? |
