The period 17831820 is probably the least studied phase of American immigration. There are no previous comprehensive studies of the period, and general histories of American immigration treat it only lightly. It is of course a period when the numbers of immigrants were slight in comparison to later migrations and when wars and depressions sometimes brought the process nearly to a halt. In Vor der großen Flut, Hans-Jürgen Grabbe has undertaken a prodigious piece of research and illuminated the significance of this oft-forgotten era. |
