Like all good books, Mario Del Pero's treatment of relations between the United States and Christian Democratic Italy raises many questions. Did Washington policy makers, for example, fail to understand the nature of the Christian Democrats (Democrazia Cristiana, DC), or did they understand it all too well and work to undermine it? The answer contains elements of both. Del Pero's meticulously researched study makes clear that Washington rarely saw eye to eye with the DC, its "inconvenient ally"; and, as he implies, the adjective could have just as easily been applied in the other direction, by Rome toward the Americans. |
