Thomas E. Chávez, former curator and director of the Palace of Governors of the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe, has penned this most recent addition to the historical literature about Spain and the American Revolution. It is a handsomely published work, rich with illustrations of many of the Spaniards who played a role in that event, and contain numerous maps to guide the reader through the far-flung campaigns of Spanish forces in the New and Old worlds. Most of the author's previous publications focused on southwestern borderland topics. Inspired in part by the Spanish government's intense involvement in the American bicentennial celebrations nearly three decades ago, Chávez turned his literary talents to a much broader subject. |
