After
'the Year Eighty': The Demise of Franciscan Power in Spanish New Mexico. By Jim Norris.
(Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 2000. xii, 212 pp. $39.95, ISBN
0-8263-2211-5.)

is tempted to ignore the author's unsatisfactory definition of his aims: to
examine how the demise of Franciscan authority in New Mexico occurred,
focusing on the order itself and on how the missionary operation functioned,
but considering Franciscan relations with other forces only as part of the
struggle for power and giving no special attention to social, cultural, or
economic factors. |
