In "Heaven Will Frown on Such a Cause as This," Joanna D. Cowden explores the diversity found within the ranks of the Civil War's Peace Democrats. Cowden does not intend to provide a comprehensive study of the Peace Democratic movement. Rather, she presents biographical portraits of six prominent war dissenters: Thomas Hart Seymour of Connecticut; James Asheton Bayard of Delaware; William Bradford Reed of Pennsylvania; Charles O'Conor of New York; and a comparative chapter on the Ohioans Alexander Long and Clement Vallandigham. Cowden emphasizes that, while much attention has been given by historians to the highly visible and controversial Vallandigham, he did not define the contours of the Peace Democrats' wartime opposition. |
