Book Review
American Exceptionalism. By Deborah L. Madsen. (Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 1998. viii, 186 pp. Paper, $18.00, isbn 1-57806-108-3.)

American exceptionalism has an interesting and confusing history. The term was formulated by Alexis de Tocqueville in his classic Democracy in America (1835, 1840). It obviously only has meaning in a comparative context. Tocqueville sought to describe and analyze why the American Revolution succeeded while the French Revolution had failed, why democracy worked in America while it failed or did not exist elsewhere. |
