This is the first volume of a projected three that promise to be the definitive history of the Russians in America from the early Pacific explorations to the sale of Alaska. It is an ambitious collaborative project of the Center for North American Studies of the Institute of Universal History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, supported by the International Scholarly Fund "Cultural Initiative" (Soros Foundation) and the Russian Humanities Scholarship Fund. The director of the project and chief editor of this volume, Nikolai Bolkhovitinov, is one of the leading Russian scholars of American history and Russian-American relations. Known throughout his long professional career in Soviet and post-Soviet times as a spokesman for, and practitioner of, genuine historical scholarship, Bolkhovitinov has made a clear imprint upon the work in his selection of authors and by his own substantial contribution. |
