Edward Willis Scripps was not the only individual to build an extensive group (or chain) of newspapers; eight others were established before 1900. Yet Scripps merits attention, this book convincingly contends, because of his highly unusual approach to journalisma focus on working-class readers and a strong distrust of advertisers. His highly efficient and centralized management style "pioneered the model of a modern newspaper organization," although today most newspaper chains are themselves subsidiaries of media conglomerates. |
