Fire in His Heart: Bishop Benjamin Tucker Tanner and the A.M.E. Church. By William Seraile. (Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press, 1998. xiv, 242 pp. $32.50, isbn 1-57233-027-9.)
|
Professor William Seraile has written an impressive biography of an important black churchman, Benjamin Tucker Tanner, whose life spanned the period 18351923. Tanner was a major black intellectual. Seraile makes this point in microscopic detail, using the limited papers of Tanner and the articles that the bishop wrote in the Christian Recorder and A.M.E. Church Review. What emerges from this close examination of Tanner's career is a very complex picture of black life in the period before and after the Civil War. |
