At a time when growing numbers of progressive organizations must turn to philanthropic associations for funding, the topic of Richard Magat's studythe relationship between foundations and laboris both interesting and important. Magat, a former foundation president, challenges what he describes as a widespread but misinformed belief that American foundations work against the interests of labor. Far from being hostile to unions, he contends, hundreds of foundations have taken "a direct interest in organized labor," sponsoring measures designed "to ameliorate industrial strife." |
