C. Bradley Thompson attempts to rescue John Adams from the neglect and abuse that have dogged his reputation since the later years of the eighteenth century. Thompson raises the very strong claim on Adams's behalf that he "was America's finest eighteenth century student of the political sciences." Although the book does not engage in enough comparative analysis really to make good that extraordinary claim, nonetheless, it does go very far toward rendering it plausible. |
