BOOK NOTES
| Difference and Identity: A Special Issue of Literature and Medicine. Edited by Jonathan M. Metzl and Suzanne Poirier (The Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, 2005, pbk, ISBN 0–8018–8205–2) 207 pp.
|
With contributions from Sander Gilman, Thomas Laqueur, and Sidonie Smith, this issue of Literature and Medicine is a treat for those among us interested in the history of medicine and representations. Covering topics from disability, sexuality, embodiment, and racially constructed bodies, the authors explore questions of 'difference and identity' in relation to medicine, health experiences, and representations of bodies. Published by the highly reputable Johns Hopkins University Press, this little edited collection will make a useful text for postgraduates and others in the fields it covers.

| Surgical and Medical Treatment in Art. By Alan EH Emery and Marcia LH Emery (Royal Society of Medicine Press Ltd, London, 2006, hb, ISBN 1-85315-695-7), x + 139 pp.
|
| Like other titles which include illustrations of health and medicine, this book is a beautiful collector's item with large, coloured plates accompanied by robust descriptions of the artworks and contextual information. Medieval illuminated manuscripts, sixteenth-century paintings, famous depictions of surgery, field hospitals, blood letting, and an early-twentieth century painting of the first x-ray for cancer of the breast are just some of the treasures in this book. As an academic historian teaching this subject I recommend the work as one for the shelf, so that images to analyse, depict, or simply arouse student interest are always on hand. |
