Vol. 112, No. 5

DECEMBER 2007

Cover Illustration: This depiction of "the manner in which the Portuguese [in Goa] who are of noble descent and wealth have themselves carried about " is one of a series of illustrations of life in Portuguese India created by the Dutch traveler Jan Huyghen van Linschoten (1563–1611). Linschoten was born in Haarlem and set out on his travels in 1579. Between 1583 and 1589, he worked chiefly for the Dominican Archbishop of Goa, João Vicente da Fonseca. He returned to the Netherlands in 1592, after a sojourn in the Azores. His detailed and illustrated account of Portuguese Asia under Habsburg rule, and more generally of the Iberian overseas empires, was published in Dutch, and was quickly translated into other European languages. It had a significant impact on Dutch plans to challenge the Portuguese in Asia. In "Holding the World in Balance: The Connected Histories of the Iberian Overseas Empires, 1500–1640 " (p. 1359), Sanjay Subrahmanyam reflects on the Iberian empires and the scope and nature of their mutual influence. From Itinerario: Voyage ofte schipvaert [. . .] naer Oost ofte Portugaels Indien [. . .] (Amsterdam, 1596). Signed by the engraver, Jan (or Johannes Baptista) van Doetechem.
