Vol. 112, No. 4

OCTOBER 2007

Cover Illustration: The unique political experiment that was the League of Nations attracted a number of gifted journalists, artists, photographers, and novelists, who flocked to Geneva between the wars to observe and depict its leading personalities and trademark practices. Among the most brilliant of these chroniclers were the political cartoonists Alois Derso and Emery Kelen, whose sketches capture both the internationalist ideals of many of the League's supporters and the political and economic insecurities threatening their goals. Some of Derso and Kelen's best work can be found in Le Testament de Genève (1931), a collection of sketches about the first decade of the League's activities. Many of the drawings borrow biblical motifs, with (for example) the ark of peace poised precariously on the mount of Locarno, Briand as Moses leading the people to the promised land of a United States of Europe, or the officials of the Secretariat parting the waters of economic crisis. Here the League appears as a placid, tongue-in-cheek paradise: Adam and Eve are busy with the ubiquitous paperwork, while the world statesmen (in the form of various animals) ruminate and confer. In "Back to the League of Nations" (p. 1091), Susan Pedersen reviews recent scholarship on the League, exploring its lasting imprint on today's global institutions and practices. Sketch reproduced by permission of Princeton University Archives, Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, Princeton University Library.
