Vol. 112, No. 2

APRIL 2007

Cover Illustration: Man the Guns—Join the Navy was a recruiting poster for the U.S. Navy designed by McClelland Barclay in 1942. Barclay produced several such posters in the first year and a half of World War II before going down with a torpedoed ship in the South Pacific in 1943. He had specialized before the war in magazine covers and advertisements that featured women and high-fashion clothing, but on his recruiting posters he portrayed men with prominent jaws and rippling muscles. On one occasion a gunner looked at a sketch Barclay was doing of him and remarked that it hardly looked like him, to which Barclay replied, "Well, if I sketched you as you are, it wouldn’t make much of a recruiting poster, would it?" In his review essay in this issue titled "Masculinities in War and Peace," Robert A. Nye argues that the choice to present ruggedly masculine images of (white) soldiers and sailors as the military symbols of the nation was the mid-twentieth-century American version of gendered representations of the citizen-soldier that have been in constant evolution throughout Europe and North America since the American Revolution.
