This book by Tyler Priest suffers from its author's ambition. For the most part, it recounts the interesting history of the manganese trade, particularly the development of Brazil's mines. Priest, however, uses the information to draw broad conclusions about international capitalism that his subject matter is too narrow to support.	. . .
