| During the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition, the membership brochure of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation invited people to join up and "Live the Spirit." The foundation's mission is "to stimulate public appreciation of the Lewis and Clark Expedition's contributions to America's heritage." It supports education, research, development "and preservation of the Lewis and Clark experience." A hundred years ago, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were celebrated as agents of triumphant nationalism; today's celebrations must try to be more inclusive. Lewis and Clark are heroes for every generation, and their journey is America's odyssey—the nation followed the path they blazed to the West. |
