David C. Hendrickson has written a complex and remarkable book that, if it has the influence it deserves, may well mark an important paradigm shift in early American history. So much has been written in recent decades about the intellectual world of the American revolutionary era that offering a fresh perspective might seem impossible. But in a book that deftly combines intellectual, constitutional, and diplomatic history, Hendrickson significantly reorients our understanding of the creation of the American republic.
