| Oliver Wendell Holmes (senior, not junior) has for some time now been relegated to the stale bin of the genteel tradition. The "Breakfast Table" series, his best-known works, now lie unread, dismissed as thin, ephemeral, and all-too-often cloying prose. His philosophy is seen as soggy idealism, sadly wanting some of his jurist son's tough mindedness. Holmes senior's light touch is perceived only to have hiddenand not very well at thathis patriarchal streak. In recent years, only his medical commentary has earned any respect. |
