Arthur Versluis. The Esoteric Origins of the American Renaissance. New York: Oxford University Press. 2001. Pp. 234. $45.00.
|
In this volume, Arthur Versluis extends his studies of religious esotericism to the mid-nineteenth century American literary renaissance. The result is a sometimes convincing, sometimes baffling, but consistently stimulating reading of a half-dozen canonical and a few obscure American authors. The study should henceforth be taken into consideration in any overview of this phase in American cultural history and in any narrative of alternative religious traditions. |
