In this highly informative and interesting work, Martha C. Knack discusses the rather unique interaction between the Southern Paiute Indians and Euro-Americans from the time of first contact to the end of the twentieth century. The author, an anthropologist, employs a historical style of writing that makes the book much more accessible to scholars and students of Native American history than the usual anthropological tome. It is a welcome addition to the growing number of studies that follow the fate of an individual Indian tribe up to the present day. The book's great value is that it provides a balanced, analytical account of the relationship the Southern Paiutes had with a variety of outsiders, without inordinate efforts to place blame or celebrate Native ways of life. |
