Rhodri Jeffreys-Jones here proposes to synthesize the "history of American secret intelligence." Based on limited original research in primary sources and extensive reading of the relevant secondary literature, this ambitious study surveys the role of intelligence agencies and their leaders dating from the American Revolution through the first year of George W. Bush's presidency. Its scope is invariably limited insofar as many records essential to understanding this history either remain closed or have been heavily redacted when released in response to Freedom of Information Act requests. Yet, and not because of these research restrictions, this is a deeply flawed and inadequate history. |
