This great book, despite a rather awkward main title (and shouldn't the subtitle read "An American Identity"? What about The Matter of Metacom: . . . ?), now takes its place as the most important statement to date on the emergence of "American identity" in colonial New England. Two of the book's qualities require acknowledgment of its superiority in the field. |
