This special issue arises from a conference, Transatlantic Slaving and the African Diaspora: Using the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute Dataset of Slaving Voyages, held on September 11 13, 1998. Hosted and supported by the College of William and Mary and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the meeting took place at two sites: Colonial Williamsburg's Bruton Heights School Education Center and Morton Hall and Phi Beta Kappa Hall at the College of William and Mary. We are grateful to both institutions for their hospitality and generous backing. |

We would also like to express our appreciation to the four sponsors that joined the College and Colonial Williamsburg in supporting the conference. These are: the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture at the College of William and Mary, the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute of Afro-American and African Studies at Harvard University, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. The material and intellectual investments afforded the enterprise by these organizations were indispensable. |
