Did Native American converts to Christianity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries somehow give up their Indian identity to become Christians? Bonnie Sue Lewis answers with an emphatic "no" in this deeply-researched study of the role of Native clergy in Nez Perce and Dakota Presbyterian churches from the 1870s until the 1930s. Lewis shows that Native clergy defined themselves as both Christian and Indian and demonstrates how religious practices in the Native churches were subtly shaped and influenced by traditional beliefs. |
