Disaster at the Colorado: Beale's Wagon Road and the First Emigrant Party. By Charles W. Baley. (Logan: Utah State University Press, 2002. xi + 216 pp. Illustrations, maps, appendixes, notes, bibliography, index. $19.95, paper.)

      This is a good book, worthy to join a host of other western trails studies that have appeared since we entered the Great Western Trails Renaissance some twenty years ago. The National Park Service manages twenty national historical and scenic trails, including the Oregon, California, Santa Fe, and the Mormon trails (your tax dollars at work). Someday Beale's wagon road may be so designated. . . .
