Colorado County, Texas, is
a fascinating historical place, as Angela Boswell demonstrates in
Her Act and Deed. Placing women at the center of her analysis,
Boswell teases out the intricacies of Colorado County life not only
as a "rural Southern" community but as a growing western
community as well. She points out that, although Colorado County
aptly displayed rural southern characteristics, its development
was certainly unique in the western characteristics that grew as
a result of interactions between people, governments, and legal
institutions. This development took place on men's terms, but women
brought into question the dynamics of what community-building meant
in Texas. |
