No one has done for the almost-forgotten War of 1812 what Jon Latimer does in the refreshing, authoritative, and information-packed 1812: War with America. He has brought to life the conflict's battles on land and sea, its myths, its heroes, and its consequences. He looks at the war from the British perspective and documents his findings in 145 pages of notes and 56 pages of bibliography, which enriches readers' understanding of this topic. Latimer concludes that the War of 1812 was an .irritating distraction. (p. 4) for the British, who were preoccupied with stopping Napoleon in Europe, and .a failed war of conquest. (p. 3) for the Americans, who had hoped to conquer Canada. |
