      Mark Hoffman's "My Brave Mechanics" details the service of the First Michigan Engineers throughout America's most pivotal war. What separates this regimental history from other examples of the genre is that it highlights the role engineers played from 1861 to 1865. Most unit histories chronicle infantry, cavalry, and artillery; support units usually receive little or no attention. The role played by engineers is an often-overlooked aspect of military operations that is nevertheless integral to the successful conduct of any field campaign. . . .
