The republication of Samuel Marquis's Henry Ford: An Interpretation brings to modern readers interested in Michigan and auto-industry history an engaging biographical portrait that is also part memoir. David Lewis's informative introduction includes background information on Marquis and on the book's publication. Marquis was Henry Ford and Clara Ford's pastor. He was the Dean of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and the Fords and Marquises socialized frequently. Marquis also accompanied Henry Ford on the ill-fated 1915 peace-ship expedition. Marquis joined the Ford Sociological Department in 1915, and he became director of the department in 1919. He resigned his position in January 1921 after Ford sided against him in a dispute with Charles Sorensen. |
