| This book is another notable example of the excellent commitment of the Canadian Committee on Labour History (CCLH) to publishing histories based on the memories of labour activists. It centres on the response of workers in New Brunswick to the announcement of the introduction of wage and price controls by the Trudeau federal Liberal Government in October 1975. George Vair was a labour activist in the city of Saint John, who helped organise there a national strike, euphemistically called a National Day of Protest, against the controls on 14 October 1976. Vair was a president of local branches in both the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the United Auto Workers. At the time of the strike, he was a full-time business agent for Local 1065 of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union and President of the Saint John District Labour Council. |
