| Scholars continue to add specialized studies to the military history of the Revolutionary War. John A. Nagy's Rebellion in the Ranks makes a valuable contribution to this literature. Nagy scoured primary sources to find any mention of mutiny among the forces fighting the war. |

Although the charge of mutiny appears in "5.8 percent of all the American courts martial" records, Nagy includes only those cases where there was an "actual" revolt or a threat of "armed insurrection," not acts of disobedience and insubordination (pp. xv–xvi). Using those criteria appendix A lists the date, location, and unit for fifty-six mutinies in the Continental Army, twenty-nine mutinies on American naval vessels, and twenty-nine mutinies in the Crown's forces. Maps locating these mutinies supplement the lists. |
