| The Trail of Tears is the latest documentary to recount the Cherokees' expulsion from the Southeast in the early nineteenth century. Cherokee removal is a familiar topic, one of the best known, most thoroughly studied, and most extensively commemorated episodes of Native American history. While the film offers little new information, it tells the old stories well and provides a more complete account of the Trail of Tears than can be found in other documentaries. It will remain, I suspect, the definitive film treatment of the subject for many years to come. |
