| A. J. Tomlinson: Plainfolk Modernist. By R. G. Robins. (New York: Oxford University Press, 2004. x, 316 pp. $45.00, ISBN 0-19-516591-8.)

| In this beautifully written account of the life of Ambrose Jessup Tomlinson, R. G. Robins manages to mix biography with an important theoretical revision. Tomlinson was one of the more important and colorful leaders of early pentecostalism, and few writers have been able to get beneath the surface of his strong religious personality. Robins masterfully uncovers the roots of Tomlinson's religious psyche, tracing his heritage among holiness Quakers and explaining his penchant for conflict in a lifetime of religious battles. |
