| Over the past two and a half decades, the trends in Irish American studies have broadened our understanding of the parameters of Irish immigration to the United States and the creation of Irish America. Beginning with the pathbreaking studies of such pioneers as Arnold Schrier and continuing with the breakthrough studies of the 1980s that examined the complexities of the Irish and American experiences of immigrants, both male and female, our knowledge of the breadth and depth of Irish America is now considerably more refined and expansive. In more recent years, further study has shown the importance of regional variation among the Irish in America, as well as Irish America's influence on Irish as well as American history. |
