| A Framework for Immigration: Asians in the United States. By Uma A. Segal. (New York: Columbia University Press, 2002. xii, 468 pp. Cloth, $52.50, ISBN 0-231-12082-6. Paper, $24.50, ISBN 0-231-12083-4.)

In the preface to her work, Uma A. Segal offers the following purpose statement:
The aim of the book is to provide to the reader an understanding of the Asian American experience and a recognition that the profile of the Asian American is shaped not only by the immigrants and their descendants themselves but by the nation's response to their presence. (p. viii)
Since scholars in the fields of both Asian American studies and immigration history would consider this dynamic old news, one must assume that the book is intended to serve as an introductory text for college students and general readers. As such, it offers a somewhat useful overview of the historical and contemporary forces that have helped to shape the lives of Asian Americans. |
