| Jonathan D. Martin provides a comprehensive examination of slave hiring, a surprisingly neglected topic of American slavery. Slave hiring "divided mastery" by allowing masters to retain ownership while giving hirers temporary control of labor. This process could set whites against one another, since the owner was most concerned with preserving his investment while the renter tried to maximize the slave's usefulness with little regard to long-term consequences. Slaves understood this natural division, and many worked to exploit the differences between owner and hirer. |
