John W. Sherman's A Communist Front at Mid-Century provides a short (174 pages including notes, bibliography, and index) history of the American Committee for Protection of Foreign Born (ACPFB). Relying on the ACPFB's papers at the University of Michigan, Sherman discusses its origins in the early 1930s, its heyday in the late 1930s and 1940s as an advocate and legal defender of immigrants, and its slide to insignificance in the 1950s under sustained political and governmental attack for its Communist links. |
