Book Review
Times Square Roulette: Remaking the City Icon. By Lynne B. Sagalyn. (Cambridge: MIT Press, 2001. xviii, 620 pp. $59.95, ISBN 0-262-19462-7.)

In this exciting, well-written, richly illustrated, and perfectly documented book, Lynne B. Sagalyn weaves the tale of the multi-billion-dollar transformation of New York City's Times Square around themes of city planning and design, political decision making, urban economics, and real estate development. She argues that in the late twentieth century large-scale urban development takes place within the context of public-private "deal-making," not grand comprehensive plans, and that mastering the details of the deal is essential to understanding contemporary city-building practices. |
