In Designs against Charleston, Edward A. Pearson offers an engaging analysis of the culture that produced Denmark Vesey's bold but aborted plan to overthrow white domination of the South Carolina low country. A comprehensive transcript of the trials that resulted from white Charlestonians' discovery of the plot follows Pearson's fine introductory essay. Pearson's book closes with three appendices: a timeline of events, biographical information on the participants, and a sampling of newspapers and letters from the period. This imaginative blending of analysis and primary documents enriches scholarly understanding of the Vesey conspiracy and black cultures in the age of slavery, and it will make an excellent teaching tool for undergraduate classes. |
