At a time when most biographies tend to be vastly overwritten, Marco Mariano has produced a highly readable, informative, and wide-ranging book on Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. that covers more ground than the reader anticipates. Using the historian, the public figure, and some personal traits of Schlesinger as his focus, Mariano reconstructs vital issues of American historiography, taking as his point of departure the debate published in the special issue of the Journal of American History under the heading "The Practice of American History" (December 1994). In his own book, however, Mariano does more than merely analyze the position taken at that particular point in time, which may indeed have had its special appeal at the date of its publication and given the international status of the contributors involved. |
