Rocky Mountain Radical: Myron W. Reed, Christian Socialist. By James A. Denton. (Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 1997. xii, 206 pp. $45.00, ISBN 0-8263-1814-2.)

Though relatively neglected by historians, Christian socialism was an important current of thought in industrializing America. Staking out the left wing of the larger Social Gospel movement, Christian socialists such as W. D. P. Bliss and George D. Herron created a stir not only through their powerful sermons and writings but also through participation in such organizations as the Knights of Labor and the Socialist party. In this thoroughly researched and important book, James A. Denton provides us with an intellectual portrait of a similar figure, Denver's Myron W. Reed, the leading Christian socialist in the American West in the last two decades of the nineteenth century. . . .
