| In 1966 the Florida Board of Forestry commissioned Baynard Kendrick to write a history of forests, forestry, and the forests products industry in that state. Kendrick, a veteran of World War I, had held various jobs in the forest products industry, including the presidency of Putnam Wood Products, and authored twenty-nine popular mysteries and historical fiction books. Submitted one year later, his manuscript remained unedited and unpublished for thirty-five years. Then Florida's Division of Forestry initiated a publication effort. As project editor, Barry Walsh, a freelance writer and member of the society of American Foresters, edited the manuscript, compiled illustrations, and collected the more recent material that came to comprise the last two chapters of the book, bringing it up to date. |
