| Environmental historians who study landscapes in transition will find much of interest in a new collection of essays, Old Fields: Dynamics and Restoration of Abandoned Farmland. Edited by ecologists Viki A. Cramer and Richard J. Hobbs, this volume caters to novices and practitioners alike, with introductory chapters that survey the study of farmland abandonment, coupled with a dozen case studies drawn from ecosystems around the world. The bulk of the book surveys succession in locales ranging from Amazonia to Australia, and from Spain to South Africa, each of which demonstrates the contingent nature of land cover change. The range of landscapes encompassed in this volume is impressive, and the net effect leaves the reader with a healthy sense of the complexity of local landscapes, and in particular, with an appreciation of the challenges of restoration ecology. |
